A search ad, in your words and inside their limits

Say what you want to be found for. The headlines, descriptions and keywords come back inside the limits, pointed at a page that exists, and created paused.

Search advertising is the one channel where the customer arrives already looking for what you sell. Nobody is being interrupted. They typed the thing in, and the question is only whether you are on the page when they do.

It is also the channel most owner run businesses give up on fastest, because the screen you have to fill in is written for people who do this every day. Thirty character headlines. Ninety character descriptions. Keywords, match types, a landing page, a daily budget in a currency you have to check. It is not hard so much as unforgiving, and the first advert you write by yourself usually comes back rejected for a reason you have to look up.

Say it the way a customer would search for it

A new search advert in Velora starts with the Search ad assistant. Tell it what the business wants to be found for: the service, the area, who it is for.

That is the whole brief. Not a keyword list, not a match type. A sentence in the language you would use if you were describing the job to somebody at a braai.

What comes back, already inside the rules

It writes headlines inside thirty characters and descriptions inside ninety, which are Google's own limits. It picks the keywords, meaning the searches this advert should answer. And it chooses the page the advert should land on from the pages that actually exist on your site.

You get a campaign name that only you ever see, the headlines Google will mix and match between, the descriptions, and the keywords, all in one place to read over.

The landing page being chosen rather than typed is the quiet safeguard. An advert that points at a page that does not exist is money spent to deliver somebody to a 404, and it is an easy mistake to make by hand, because the page was there when you wrote the advert and got renamed in March.

Then the money, and the preview

The budget is in rands per day, under a cap you set, so there is a ceiling above the ceiling.

And there is a preview: one of the combinations Google can show, on the address people will actually see. Search adverts are assembled from your headlines at the moment somebody searches, so no preview can show you every version. What it can show you is what the shape of it looks like, which is enough to catch a headline that reads badly next to the others.

It is created paused

Create puts the campaign into your own Google Ads account, paused. Nothing spends until you switch it on from this screen, when you are ready and not before.

From then on the results come back every night: what you spent, the clicks, and the enquiries. The account is yours, not ours. Velora builds into it and reads from it.

The video at the top of this post is a search advert being written, start to finish, with nothing cut out.
